Today is Make Way Day 2026, a national campaign that highlights the importance of ensuring public spaces and pathways are accessible for everyone.
At St. Michael’s House, we are committed to supporting people with disabilities to advocate for their rights, have their voices heard and help create more accessible and inclusive communities.
To mark Make Way Day, we are proud to share the story of Celina from our Enterprise Local Centre, who recently took action to improve safety in her local area.
While walking to the local shop, Celina and Sarah encountered an uneven and raised section of footpath which caused them both to fall. Wanting to help prevent anyone else from getting hurt, Celina decided to do something about it.
With support from her key worker Michael, Celina contacted Dublin City Council to raise her concerns about the pathway. Dublin City Council responded quickly and arranged for repairs to be carried out, making the area safer and more accessible for everyone in the community.

This story is a wonderful example of self-advocacy in action and highlights the positive impact people can have when they are empowered and supported to speak up about issues affecting their daily lives.
St. Michael’s House would like to congratulate Celina on this fantastic achievement and thank Dublin City Council for their prompt response and support.
A special thank you also to Michael and the staff team in Enterprise Local Centre for supporting and encouraging advocacy and community participation.
