World Autism Awareness Day | Robert's Proposal to Recognise Swords as an Autism Friendly Town

Issued 2 April 2026

World autism awareness day (1)

Today, we mark World Autism Awareness Day, celebrating the creativity, resilience and innovation of people with autism.

At St. Michael’s House, we are committed to supporting people with autism and disabilities to fully participate in, and contribute to, all aspects of community life.

To honour this year’s theme, Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value, we are delighted to share Robert’s story from our Abhainn service. Robert successfully brought forward a proposal to Fingal County Council to have Swords recognised as an Autism Friendly Town, in partnership with AsIAm, Councillor John Smyth, Councillor Joe Newman, and the wider Swords community

This initiative has led to businesses and public spaces across Swords introducing autism-aware practices, supporting the creation of a more inclusive, accessible and welcoming environment for neurodivergent people.

Congratulations to Robert and the team at Abhainn, and sincere thanks to AsIAm, Cllr Smyth, Cllr Newman, Lidl Ireland, Circle K Ireland, SuperValu, and the Swords community for their collaboration and commitment to inclusion.
