St. Michael’s House is pleased to announce its participation in the Keep My Teeth Project, a new research initiative led by Trinity College Dublin and the Dublin Dental Hospital, in collaboration with the Federation of Voluntary Service Providers (FEDVOL).

This project aligns strongly with St. Michael’s House’s strategic ambitions, particularly Goal 4: Learning from and influencing the sector, government and society.  By engaging in sector-wide research, St. Michael’s House continues to promote best practice and support improved health outcomes for the people who use our services.

About the Project

People with oral health difficulties often experience poorer overall health, and this research aims to evaluate the impact of targeted initiatives to improve daily mouth care and oral hygiene. The Keep My Teeth Project focuses on enhancing the skills and knowledge of staff supporting adults with intellectual disabilities.

The programme will be delivered in three phases:

  1. Specialist Training:
Dental professionals will deliver interactive workshops for key staff. These sessions include presentations, practical demonstrations and discussions on oral hygiene and healthy diet.

  2. Sharing Knowledge Across Services:
Staff who complete the training will share their learning with colleagues within their own services, helping to strengthen daily mouth care practices across St. Michael’s House.

  3. Follow-Up and Evaluation:
Ongoing activities will assess the effectiveness of the training and support sustained improvements in oral health and wellbeing.

Training Session in Dublin Dental Hospital

We would like to acknowledge and thank the Keep My Teeth team, Dr. Caoimhín Mac Giolla Phádraig and Pedro Kammer (Trinity College Dublin) and Alan Byrne (FEDVOL), for hosting the first Train the Trainer session on Friday 28th November 2025 in the Dublin Dental Hospital.

Ten staff members from St. Michael’s House participated in this session, marking an important first step in the project’s roll-out. Feedback from participants was extremely positive.
