St. Michael’s House proudly celebrated the official opening of the new extension at St. Michael’s House Special National School, Ballymun, last Wednesday, 12 November 2025. This significant development marks a major step forward in enhancing inclusive, high-quality education for children and young people with disabilities.

Funded by the Department of Education & Youth (DEY), the project includes newly built classrooms and upgraded facilities that link the upper and lower school buildings. This integration brings the full school community together under one roof, improving accessibility, connection and the overall learning environment for the school’s 64 students.

As the proud patron body, St. Michael’s House was represented on the day by our CEO, Liz Reynolds and members of our Board of Directors, who joined students, families, school staff, members of the St. Michael's House CDNT, DEY representatives and local community representatives including Paul McAuliffe TD and Fr McDonald.

The event was officially opened by Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, Minister Michael Moynihan, who said:

“I am delighted to officially open these new classrooms at St. Michael’s House Special National School in Ballymun. This development demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has access to a supportive, inclusive and high-quality learning environment. The dedication of the school’s staff and the wider St. Michael’s House community is truly inspiring and these new facilities will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the students and their families.”

Principal Caroline Sheill reflected on the impact of the new extension, stating:

“This expansion marks a transformative chapter for our school. Bringing our school community together under one roof allows us to better serve our students and strengthen the bonds between students, staff, families and the wider community. These improvements reflect our shared commitment to inclusive education and to building bright futures for all our students.”

Looking Ahead

The new extension reflects the school’s ethos, “Learning Together and Growing Together,” and marks an exciting new chapter for SMH Ballymun Special National School. These enhanced facilities will strengthen teaching, learning and care for students with disabilities, many of whom have additional complex needs.

St. Michael’s House extends heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in achieving this important milestone.
