  • Congratulations - Gerard Tyrrell - 100km for St. Michael's House Baldoyle Special National School

Congratulations to Gerard Tyrrell who completed an amazing 100km around the walls of Malahide Castle on Sunday 18th July 2015.

Gerard was raising funds for our Baldoyle Special National School located in Baldoyle, Dublin 13.  Check out his MyCharity link at

St. Michael’s House Special National School, Baldoyle, provides an educational service to pupils with Severe and Profound General Learning Disabilities. We currently have 55 pupils ranging in age from 4yrs to 18yrs. Many of the pupils have a physical disability, additional sensory impairments and complex medical needs. During the school day, the pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum where great learning takes place. Our pupils are at the earliest stages of development and learning in areas such as cause and effect, developing eye contact, learning to understand and anticipate what is happening next and how to communicate.Owing to the level of disability, these pupils rely on technology to develop many skills. Currently in our school pupils have access to computer programmes using switches or touch screens. Pupils have access to only 4 iPads for the entire school that are shared among 55 pupils. We have also recently purchased an Eye-Gaze Device (the latest technology where pupils can use their eyes to make things happen on screen). There is a great demand on this technology as each and every pupil can learn about simple cause and effect, make music, learn about their environment and learn to communicate. Technology such as this is invaluable to our pupils as it allows them to experience having some control over the environment that is empowering and extremely rewarding. There is so much software suitable for pupils with significant disabilities and in the ideal world, each and every pupil would benefit from having access to an iPad or Eye-Gaze Device every day. It is, therefore, a goal for our school to purchase more of these essential devices. Each iPad costs in the region of €500.00 along with a mounting system costing approximately €200.00 each. An Eye-Gaze Device costs in the region of €4.000.00.

Again, thank you so much Gerard for raising funds and awareness for St. Michael's House and services for people with intellectual disabilities.
